Grilled green beans is one of the most popular and easiest vegetables to make on the grill. It has a great texture for grilling so all you need is to add some flavor with butter, garlic, and a little seasoning. Making this side dish on the grill in a cast iron pan is easy and not messy, while you still get the grill flavors.

GRILLED GREEN BEANS

Green beans are probably the most popular vegetable for a side dish. They’re firm and crunchy, slightly sweet, and have a mild flavor so they go very well with a wide variety of sauces and main dishes.

It doesn’t take much to make green beans taste good. Simply add a little fat like oil or butter and a few flavors from salt, pepper, garlic powder, and lemon. These are all great flavors because you hit the savory and sour notes with the sweetness of the vegetable.

Even with these few simple ingredients, these are wonderful tasting green beans. You can serve it with your favorite grilled meats like smoked sausage, grilled chicken legs, whole smoked chicken, or smoked chicken legs.

INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

Green Beans – there a dozens of variation of bush and pole beans. Common bush green beans is what you will find at most grocery stores. You can also use haricorts verts, which are thin and delicate French green beans.

Butter – butter will provide a nice familiar flavor to green beans and it will brown pretty quickly on the grill to add a little nuttiness. If you’re not a fan of butter, use olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.

Garlic – smash and mince garlic before adding to the pan to release the natural aromas and oils.

Lemon – lemon will add a nice balance of sour citrus flavor. It’s subtle, but does the trick.

Seasoning – just a simple combination of salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. If you can to add a little more heat, add some crushed red pepper flakes.

QUICK GRILLING QUESTIONS

What grill is better to use?

Anytime you want to infuse food with authentic grill flavors, you want to use charcoal or wood burning grill. These grills will add a nice smoky flavor to whatever you cook.

What to use to grill green beans?

Vegetable basket is the most common choice when it comes to cooking vegetables on the grill. I do like to use grill baskets most of the time but I have lost a few green beans that way when they slip through the holes. So when I make this green beans recipe, I prefer to use a cast iron skillet. The skillet also gives you an ability to melt and brown butter and then cook green beans in it.

How long to grill green beans?

In a grill basket, it will take a little less time than in the cast iron skillet. Depending on how soft you like green beans to be, it will take around 15 minutes.

HOW TO GRILL GREEN BEANS

1- Prepare

Snap off any stems that may still be attached to the individual bean pods and rinse the green beans in cold water. Pat them dry.

Prepare all other ingredients before starting to cook

2- Set up the grill

Prepare the grill to a two-temperature zone and make sure the hot zone is set to hot temperature, about 425°-450°. You will be cooking over cooler side or you’ll burn butter and garlic.

Set a cast iron skillet over indirect heat once the grill is preheated and let the skillet preheat for a few minutes.

3- Season and cook

Add butter to the skillet and once it starts to melt, add minced garlic and squeezed lemon juice.

When butter is melted, toss in green beans and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Use long metal tongs to toss the green beans with butter and seasoning. (It’s best to use long tongs to keep your hands away from the heat and preferably ones coated in silicone so you don’t scratch the skillet.)

Cook grill beans, stirring them often, until it’s reached desired tenderness. This will take somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes.

SOME MORE VEGETABLES TO GRILL

If you love the smoky flavors of vegetables cooked on the grill, you will love grilled zucchini and grilled mushrooms.

Don’t forget that you can make something a little more hardy like grilled potatoes.
