How to make Smoked Apple Crisp
Ingredients – Apple Filling:
Apples – Apples are the primary focus in your Smoked Apple Crisp, so choose wisely! Honeycrisp apples are the cream of the crop when it comes to naturally sweet juicy apples. Feel free to experiment with other apples, but for our crisp, we always go Honeycrisp.
Apple Pie Spice – A combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and Allspice, Apple Pie Spice will help you bring out the comforting flavor in your apples.
Maple Syrup – a sweetening agent that brings in that great fall flavor.
Bourbon – This is BBQ! Do I need a reason to add bourbon… you’re lucky I didn’t add bacon to this thing. Oh wait… bacon, no don’t do it…. don’t do it.
All Purpose Flour – Does what flour does best, thickens your sauce.
Lemon Juice – Lemon juice helps the apples retain their color while adding some acidity to the crisp. This will help to balance out the flavors.
Butter – Coats and browns the apples.
Preparing the filling:
We all know the star of this show is the apples! So lets get started on the star. Cutting around the core, you’ll want to peel and slice your apples thin, but not too thin that they turn to mush.
Using a medium-low heat, add your apples into a pot with melted butter, tossing the apples so that they are entirely covered. Add in your maple syrup, lemon juice, flour and apple pie spice. As the apple continue to cook, they will start to release their natural juice. As the apples begin to soften, add in your bourbon.

Frequently Asked Questions
DOES IT HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED?
This is the most common question about apple crisp, whether it has to be refrigerated after baking. I always recommend to refrigerate it because it will extend the shelf life by several days and it will prevent bacteria from growing in your dessert. Left on the counter, there is a high chance of bacteria growth in apples, so it’s better to be safe.
CAN I FREEZE APPLE CRISP?
Yes! You absolutely can freeze apple crisp but do it before baking.
If you’re planning on freezing apple crisp, you can prepare it right in an aluminum baking pan. Prepare the apples and the oat topping according to the recipe, spread it in the pan, and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap first and then with aluminum foil. Label and freeze for up to 3 months.
Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before baking. When ready to smoke, make sure to take off the plastic wrap and foil and smoke uncovered at 350° for about 45 minutes.
HOW DO I REHEAT THE SMOKED APPLE CRISP?
It’s very easy to reheat the crisp in a microwave, in a microwave safe bowl, for a few seconds.
So to store cooked apple crisp, cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap or a fitted lid to keep it air-tight and keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.
